Zachary Dunbar trained as a concert pianist in the US, completing his undergraduate studies at Rollins College, with Thomas Brockman and Sylvia Reynolds, and taking masterclasses with Guido Agosti, Claude Frank, Rudolf Firkušný, and Gary Graffman. He furthered his studies at Yale University School of Music as a scholarship student of Claude Frank, Peter Frankl, and Daniel Pollack. In his first year, he received the Best Piano Recital Prize and was also a member of the honours piano trio coached by the Tokyo String Quartet. He subsequently won a Fulbright grant to study at the Royal College of Music (London) with noted Beethoven specialist Kendall Taylor.

Following his studies, Zachary pursued a concert career mostly as a recitalist and chamber musician across Europe and the United States before branching into theatre and academia. His theatre works have been staged in London, Edinburgh, Copenhagen, and Melbourne.  He has also given musical theatre acting workshops in Australia, and overseas in Santiago, Toronto, Singapore, Bangkok, New York, and London.

As an academic, Zachary has specialised in Greek Tragedy and Music theatre. He has several international publications in the field of theatre, including a book, Greek Tragedy and the Contemporary Actor (Palgrave Macmillan) which won the 2020 Australasian Drama Studies Association prize. His latest publication is ‘Writing and Performance Training in Musical Theatre’ in The Oxford Handbook of the Global Stage

His recently gave two piano recitals in Melba Hall (University of Melbourne), one in conjunction with the Australian Fulbright Alumni Association on the global refugee crisis (Refugees, Remembrance and Resilience) which drew together musicians, poets and performers. A recital last year featured a monodrama entitled ‘A Pianist Prepares’, a semi-autobiographical account of classical music training. This solo recital was in aid of the Asylum Seeker Resource centre, Bikes for Humanity, and the Climate Council.
